The team at East River Pilates
235 South 1st Street
Brooklyn, NY, 11211
Kimmy is an Australian transplant and the founder of East River Pilates. As a lover of movement and people, she brings playfulness and charisma to every class.
With ten years' experience dancing for global entertainment companies including Hong Kong Disneyland, Warner Bros., and Cirque du Soleil, Pilates was initially simply an element of daily body conditioning.Since undergoing hip surgery, Pilates has become an integral part of her life due to the ongoing benefits of post surgery rehabilitation.
Inspired by Joseph Pilates' notion that 'physical fitness is the prerequisite to happiness', Kimmy is motivated to help others experience joy as they achieve a healthy body and mind. She aspires to be an influential member of the community as she educates, and encourages people to reach their optimal physique.
Kate hails from Detroit. She completed the Comprehensive Training Program and Mat Certification at Core Pilates NYC. In addition she holds a BFA in Acting from the University of Michigan. Besides being a devoted Pilates practitioner, she's a writer and actress who makes a mean omelet. Pilates found Kate in her years as a dancer, helping her to recuperate from surgery and old injuries. As a teacher, her eye for detail and alignment keeps long time practitioners delving deeper into their practice, and teaches beginners the fundamentals in a playful, mindful way.
Originally on the path to becoming a physical therapist, Tina was first introduced to Pilates while she was completing an internship at The Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. After becoming certified on the reformer, she got hooked and realized that Pilates is not only incredibly effective, but that teaching it is really rewarding.
Tina believes Pilates can be incorporated into any form of exercise and has previously taught boot camps, interval training, and TRX, all with a Pilates mindset. With her knowledge of anatomy, experience working with diverse body types and fitness goals, and background in rehabilitation, multiple sclerosis, and pre and post natal clients, her teaching style is informed, precise, and tailored. In Tina's eyes, Pilates should be challenging and never boring!

She continues to teach Pilates and water aerobics along with PiYo and Core and Flex. Kerstin feels very lucky to be able to share her passion for fitness with everyone in her classes.

Helen Phelan was first introduced to Pilates as a method of cross-conditioning to supplement her dance training. While earning her BFA in Dance Performance and Choreography and BA in Psychology at Elon University, Helen extensively studied somatic theory; she explored Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff fundamentals, structural yoga for dancers, classical Pilates and experiential anatomy. Her professional pursuit of dance inspired her to expound upon her personal Pilates practice and complete her mat certification in January of 2013 with Kearns Yoga and Pilates in Elon, NC. After sustaining a career threatening foot injury, Helen used Pilates to rehabilitate her body and shocked even herself when she realized that her body, after intensively studying Pilates was stronger and more resilient than her pre-injury body. This revelation was the impetus she needed to enroll in the contemporary apparatus certification at The Lab in Dumbo, Brooklyn in 2015.
Upon finishing her certification Helen furthered her studies by attending several advanced education workshops at Erika Bloom Pilates Plus. It was there she studied Prenatal Pilates, Postnatal Pilates & Diastasis Correction, Gait Correction, Pilates for the Elderly, and Pilates for Scoliosis.
As a life long technical, academic and creative student of dance, (and now Pilates) Helen has grown adept at utilizing detailed, specific imagery to help you identify and perfect your alignment. Helen loves creating innovative, intensely challenging workouts for both the beginner and the advanced Pilates practitioner to define your best body.
