Join us at East River Pilates on Saturday, August 19th, at 5:30 pm, for the launch of our empowering Self Defense Workshop Series.

Hosted by MMA specialist Gerard Welch and personal trainer, Jowanda Durham, this 3.5 hour workshop will introduce you to the importance and benefits of knowing key self defense techniques, strategies, and skills. In this fun, active, and energetic workshop, you will learn how to:

  • defend yourself against a larger adversary,
  • control an attacker without harming them,
  • anticipate an attack and diffuse conflict,
  • and learn how to flee from an aggressor.

Beginners are strongly encouraged. Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move in.

Mythbusting Your Pilates Practice
with Anula Maiberg

In this workshop we will cover some common misconceptions encountered in Pilates. Most and foremost the feeling of not being good enough at certain exercises. 

We will cover some simple ways to change the language we use to discuss our bodies and make room for ourselves to feel more successful. 

The heart of this workshop is 'progress not perfection', and is aimed to improve, restore and advance your confidence on the Mat and beyond.

Sound Bath Meditation

We will begin this sound meditation event with a brief intro to sound healing and some advice on how to make the most of the experience. You will then be invited to lay down with closed eyes while a soothing soundscape is created around you to wash away your mind chatter and lead you to a theta-brainwave state of deep relaxation. The rich harmonic overtones in instruments used can have a profound healing effect on your mind and body, on a cellular and energetic level.

You may experience emotional and physical releases, movement of stagnant energies, inner journeying and out of body experiences, followed by a deep sense of grounding, realignment and well-being. Common effects in the days and weeks to follow include alleviation of pain, improved sleep, stress reduction, clarity of thought and increased creativity. Instruments used will include voice, gongs, frame drums, chimes, bells, rattles and Biosonic tuning forks.

Comfortable attire and eye masks are recommended. Mats and blankets will be provided but please bring anything extra you need to be as comfortable as possible.

Mama-To-Be Workshop Series - Your Prenatal Core 
with Ali Handley of BodyLove Pilates
