Welcome to The East River Journal

Here is where we slow things down and share what’s inspiring us at East River Pilates, from movement philosophies to community care. Our hope is that these reflections support you in building a sustainable, connected practice in every season of life.

From Lockdown to Launch

How SPRING Movement evolved from East River Pilates’ in-house teacher training program into one of the world’s most trusted Pilates education platforms is the story at the heart of this edition of the East River Journal.

What began during the uncertainty of the 2020 lockdown through voice notes, Zoom calls, and a shared commitment to better mentorship for instructors has grown into a global Pilates teacher training program rooted in real studio experience, clinical insight, and community.

In this conversation, ERP’s founder, Kimmy Kellum, and SPRING co-founder and physiotherapist, Talia Williams, reflect on the early days of building the program inside ERP, and how relationships formed within the ERP community eventually expanded into global partnerships with studios like Scout in Sydney.

March Matness

March Matness

March Matness might sound like a Pilates inside joke, but it’s actually a great reminder of something important: the mat is where the practice begins. In this month’s East River Journal, Kimmy reflects on why mat work still matters, how it builds strength you can take anywhere, and why it remains one of the most accessible ways to move with East River Pilates. From free on-demand mat classes you can do anytime, anywhere, to moving together in the studio, we explore how the mat makes Pilates available to more people (with or without a mat). Along the way, Alec and Ashley from our ERP teaching team share why mat classes continue to be one of the most powerful and empowering parts of the practice.

Black History Month | Movement as Care

Black History Month | Movement as Care

At East River Pilates, we talk a lot about wellness as community care. The spaces we move through, the people we learn from, and the small businesses that shape our neighborhoods are all part of that practice.

This month’s East River Journal is a reflection on Black History Month and on several Black-owned Brooklyn businesses that have long inspired us, including places we’re proud to support as customers and community members ourselves. They build beauty, culture, and care into everyday life.

We’re grateful for neighbors like Celsious, BLK MKT Vintage, Oko Farms, The Brooklyn Wellness Club, and The Fit In, each contributing in their own way to the fabric of our community.

Supporting Black-owned businesses is not something we believe in doing for only one month of the year. It’s an ongoing practice guided by intention, awareness, and action.

There’s a special gift in this edition, so be sure to scroll down so you don’t miss it!
